Skills to practise
  • JohnEdgar June 2011
The Bristol tournament gave us an idea of the competition out there, and the skills that we need to practise to get ahead.
Here are a number of points or tactics that the other teams were using that should help to up Oxford's game, in no particular order:

    • Set plays such as a winger setting up the ball for a striker to score
    • Precision shooting
    • Holding on to the ball whilst dribbling (inc. dribbling under BB)
    • Goal keeping
    • Lobbing
    • Goal keeping swapping
    • Communication

For those who are interested in reading quite how we should about this the lfgss forum has a whole sub-forum devoted to bike polo coaching: http://www.lfgss.com/forum58.html

Let's try incorporating some of this into our next session, Thursdays from 6-8pm at Cherwell School tennis course, next to the grass track racers, all equipment provided (free). Beginners welcome!

  • sounds good,
I think we should see who's good at what because some people can do some of them things were others can do the other things.

Another thing we all should learn is to keep carm under pressure, as when we panic we hit the ball too hard or not at all then we miss or loose the ball to the other team.
  • On Sunday the 3rd of july Dan and Becky came up with good polo games that improves skills,

One game was everyone vs everyone and the objective of the game was to hit the ball under the bottom bracket of the other players bike to score a point (Between the frount wheel and the back wheel). This is a good game to play as it improves passes to players and it improves blocking the ball from going under your bottom bracket (So if you was in goal).

Another game was that to play a normal game but each player could only have the ball for 3 or 4 secounds, or have only two touchs (untill another member of your team touchs the ball). And then if you had it longer then 3 secounds or touched it more then twice you had to tap out.

The last game was you vs the world, so basicly you are on your own vs three other players, but the team with three player could only touch the ball twice and the player on his own can touch it as many times as he liked.

These games are really fun to play i think everyone who turned up on that sunday had a good time (We played for three hours!!)
