    Hey everyone,

    If you are having problems with your bike and can't get it to the training centre or another bike shop, then you can post your problem on this message and I'll talk you through step by step till its fixed or its in a better position to bring it down.

    Or even if you want a bit of reminding on how to do something,(I even forget how to do things) then you can post it on here and i'll help you out.

    I'm on here nearly everyday so i will get back to you same day.

    I'm having gear problems with my old three-speed.  Yesterday I cycled into town and the gears were working fine, but when I came back to the bike (after lunch and a visit to the Ashmolean) I couldn't downshift into first any more.  I'm just looking at it now and it's in the same state - it switches between 3 and 2 (or at least I assume they are 3 and 2) fine, but won't downshift into 1.

    I've found this page http://www.sheldonbrown.com/sturmey-archer_tech.html#adjustment but am a bit confused by that.  Do I first unscrew the "little chain" so I can unhook it from the control cable, and then rotate the little cable where it's connected to the hub (which I can't see clearly) so as to tighten (cw?) that?

    hey,

    It sounds like the cable is too tight witch will make it difficult to pull the cable from secound to first. The little chain needs to stay in the hub but on that theres a adjustment screw on that chain, which if you loosen off it should let you go up to first gear.

    It also could be theres some rust in the cable which might be why it just started to stop working. If thats the case then for the moment just undo the tension of the cable (with that screw) and oil the cable, and that should free the cable inside the outer cable.

    If your still having problems bring it into the training centre and we can both have a look at it.

    I'm embarrassed to admit this, after fiddling with the cable adjustment, reading about hub failure modes, and so forth, but it turned out that the handlebar had rotated and was physically blocking the gear lever...  About five seconds to fix once I realised the problem.

    ok, are your gears working ok now?

    (It happen to me aswell the handle bars was twisted and it took me a bit of time to figure it out)
